How do credits and debits clear my account during nightly processing?

All deposits are credited before any items are debited in order to protect the balance on the account. Online banking same-day bill payments are an exception; they post before nightly processing.

What is a memo-post?

A memo-post is a transaction that has not yet posted, but is temporarily included in the current day's available balance until the nightly ledger update, at which time the transaction is processed and cleared for the next day.

How are Saturday banking transactions processed?

Transactions made on Saturdays are credited or debited on the following business day's nightly processing with the exception of cash transactions, which are memo-posted.

Why is a hold placed on large deposits?

On a case-by-case basis, a hold may be placed on deposits greater then $5000 to verify funds.

What is a chargeable debits fee?

A chargeable debits fee of $.50 is accessed for each item that exceeds 25 items per month. This chargeable debits fee applies only to E-Student and E-Access accounts.

How can I avoid overdraft fees on my account?

How are overdraft fees calculated?

A charge of $35 is assessed, up to four charges per day, for each overdraft created by check, in-person withdrawal, recurring debit card payment or other electronic means and for each overdraft created by ATM withdrawal or one-time debit card purchases if you have opted in to having such items paid into overdraft with a fee assessed. There is also a charge of $35 for each check drawn on your account that we return (or other order we do not pay) due to insufficient funds, also up to four such charges per day. If you overdraw your account by $5 or less on any one day, there will be no overdraft charge. The waiver of two return check charges per year is a benefit for Premier Checking customers. A $25 Continuous Overdraft Fee is charged on the 15th day and 35th day that an account remains continuously overdrawn .

In what order do transactions post?

Assuming that all deposit and withdrawal transaction types below are made and received by First Tennessee within the same business day, they will post to your account in the following order:

  1. Credits in descending dollar amount.
  2. Bank initiated debits in descending dollar amount.
  3. Non returnable debits in time stamp order (e.g., wires, ACH pre-fund transactions, debit card, ATM withdrawals, internal funds transfers, bill pay).
  4. Non returnable debits not time stamped (e.g., "on us" cashed checks in check number order).
  5. Returnable debits. ACH debit (non pre-fund transactions) by PAR number, then checks in check number order.
  6. Post-system generated transactions: service charges and fees.

What is the cut-off time for ATM transactions?

Deposits and withdrawals at an ATM that accepts deposit envelopes will receive same-day processing when the transaction is completed by 5:00 PM Central Time Monday through Thursday and by 6:00 PM Central Time on Friday. Deposits and withdrawals at an ATM that does not accept deposit envelopes will receive same-day processing for transactions completed by 8:00 PM CST Monday through Friday.  Transactions completed on Saturday will be processed the following business day.

What are foreign ATM fees?

First Tennessee charges a foreign ATM fee whenever you use an ATM outside of the First Tennessee ATM network. This fee is separate from the charges imposed by the owner of the ATM used.

If I have a transaction problem at an ATM, what do I do?

Call First Link at 800-382-5465. If the ATM is located at a First Tennessee financial center, visit that particular financial center for assistance.

First Link is a customer service center assisting both retail and commercial customers over the telephone by answering questions about existing accounts, services offered by First Tennessee, transferring funds between accounts, getting rate quotes, applying for a loan, and any other general banking questions. What is a cash advance?

A cash advance is a short-term loan obtained with a credit card (Visa, Master Card, or DISCOVER). Cash advance fees may apply.

What is a Merchant Checkout Fee?

A legal settlement now allows merchants to charge consumers a checkout fee (also referred to as a surcharge) when consumers use a credit card for payment. This fee is not permitted on debit or prepaid cards (even if the credit option is chosen for a debit card payment). The effective date of the settlement that allows merchants to charge this fee was January 27, 2013.

Is this checkout fee being collected by the bank?

No. Banks are not collecting the fee and have no control over the fees charged by merchants. We recommend all cardholders look for merchant notices or ask merchants if they will charge a checkout fee before submitting payment.

Will all merchants charge the checkout fee?

It is at a merchants’ discretion to choose if they will begin charging consumers a checkout fee for credit card payments.

How will I know about the checkout fee?

Merchants are required to disclose the fee at the entrance to their location (web site or storefront) in advance of accepting payment. The fee must also be disclosed on the payment receipt. This applies to online transactions and point of sale transactions.

How much can merchants charge for checkout fees?

Merchant checkout fees can be up to 4% of the transaction amount.

Can I dispute the checkout fee if I feel the merchant is violating the terms of the checkout fee allowance?

Yes. If you feel a merchant has charged more than permitted or if you have a checkout fee imposed on you for payment with a debit or prepaid card, you can submit a claim for investigation by Visa at www.visa.com/checkoutfees.

What is a cashier's check?

A cashier's check is check issued by First Tennessee and signed by an authorized employee. Cashier's checks can be issued for any amount and are good indefinitely. The fee for a cashier's check varies, so ask your financial center for details.

Customers can track cashier's checks by visiting or calling the First Tennessee financial center where the checks were purchased.

What is a savings bond?

A savings bond is a certificate of debt issued by the government that guarantees payment of the original debt plus interest after a specified future date. Savings bonds can be purchased for a minimum of $50 and a maximum of $10,000. Series EE bonds are purchased at half of the face value, and Series I bonds are purchased at face value.

What is a certificate of deposit?

A certificate of deposit is a certificate issued by a financial institution confirming a particular deposit. A CD has a maturity date, a specified interest rate, and can be issued in any denomination with a maximum duration of 10 years. First Tennessee offers several certificates of deposit with various features and benefits designed to fit your savings needs.

How do I set up Direct Deposit of my payroll check?

If your employer participates in a direct deposit program, you should contact the human resources or payroll department. Typically, they ask you to provide First Tennessee's routing and transit number as well as your account number. All these numbers can be found on your checking account checks.

How will I know if my check has been deposited?

Banking Online customers can view deposits and withdrawals online. You can also call First Link at 800-382-5465 to check your deposit. In addition, you may receive a check stub from your employer notifying you of the deposit.

When my payday falls on a bank holiday, when does my check get deposited?

Your paycheck is deposited on the prior business day.

When do I have access to my funds that are direct deposited?

Generally, funds are available the morning of a payday.

How do I set up Direct Deposit of my Social Security check?

Social Security Direct Deposit sign-up forms are available at most financial centers. In addition, you can call the Social Security Office at 800-772-1213 by the 22nd of the month to set up direct deposit to begin the following month.

How can I transfer funds between First Tennessee accounts?

To transfer funds using a PC, use First Tennessee's Banking Online which allows same-day posting for transfers requested by 9:00 P.M. Central Time. Click here to enroll in Banking Online.

To transfer funds from a touch-tone phone, use the First Link Funds Transfer Service, which allows same-day posting for transfers requested by 9:00 P.M. Central Time. You can also transfer funds between accounts at any First Tennessee Financial Center.

What is the difference between conventional statements and image statements?

Conventional statements include your cancelled checks with your monthly account statement. Image statements contain images of the cancelled checks with your monthly account statement.

What is the minimum balance to open a First Tennessee account?

The minimum balance to open a checking or savings account is $500. The minimum balance to open a regular CD is $1,000. These amounts may vary due to promotions.

What is the FDIC?

The FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) is an independent agency of the United States Federal Government and insures all types of deposits received by a financial institution in its usual course of business. FDIC-insured deposits are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States Federal Government.

What is the amount of FDIC insurance coverage?

The current standard maximum deposit insurance amount has been permanently increased to $250,000. Also, all funds in non-interest-bearing transaction accounts will remain insured in full by the FDIC through Dec. 31, 2012. This temporary unlimited coverage is in addition to, and separate from, the coverage of at least $250,000 available to depositors under the FDIC's general deposit insurance rules. What are the homes scheduled for foreclosure?

Homes Scheduled for Foreclosure are properties for which First Tennessee holds the lien. Prior to foreclosure, property access may be limited, and a foreclosure may be cancelled at any time.

What are the foreclosed homes for sale?

Foreclosed Homes for Sale are properties owned by First Tennessee due to defaults on mortgages by the previous owners. First Tennessee took ownership of the property when no acceptable offer was made at the foreclosure.

Call First Link at 800-382-5465 to cancel all outstanding checks. First Link agents can also set up new accounts for customers to prevent fraudulent activity.

Call First Link at 800-382-5465 to cancel the lost or stolen card. First Link agents can order a new card for you.

If I get married or need to change my legal name for some reason, what do I do?

Bring a copy of your marriage certificate and another form of valid identification to your nearest First Tennessee financial center to change the name on your accounts.

If I need to change my address on my statements, what do I do?

To change your current address for one or all accounts, call First Link at 1-800-382-5465 or visit the nearest First Tennessee financial center.

How do I reorder checks?

Current Banking Online customers can quickly reorder checks within Banking Online. Log in to Banking Online.

Checks can be reordered using the First Link Automated Service or visit your nearest First Tennessee financial center. Please remember though that no change can be made to the check style or features if ordered through the Automated System.

How do I obtain a copy of my statement?

Submit the Request Copy of Statement form, visit your nearest First Tennessee financial center, or call First Link at 800-382-5465. If you're enrolled in Monthly Statements Online, and you need a statement issued since you enrolled, you can log in and print the statement.

How do I obtain a copy of a specific check?

Submit the Request Cleared Check form, visit your nearest First Tennessee financial center, or call First Link at 800-382-5465. For retail customers, there is no charge for copies of checks posting in the last three months. If the check posted four or more months ago, the cost is $10.00 per hour (for research) and $1.00 per copy.
