Coming Home: What You Need

You've been looking forward to this day for months: the day you bring your new baby home from the hospital. To make sure they're fully prepared, many parents go all out in buying everything they think they might possibly ever need for their baby before this big day.

You can save some money, however, by scaling back. Here's a handy checklist of the most important things that you absolutely must have on that first day, and the things you can probably hold off on for a little while:

  • Must-haves:
    • Car seat
    • Crib
    • Bedding
    • High chair
    • Infant bathtub
  • Can probably wait:
    • Changing table
    • Stroller
    • Lots of clothes and toys
    • Lots of bottles and toiletries
    • Safety gates

Save even more money by shopping for used clothes, furniture and equipment. Many children's consignment shops offer high-quality clothing, furniture, toys, etc., at a fraction of retail prices. However, use caution with car seats, cribs, high chairs and strollers, as updated safety standards may render used ones obsolete.
