Corporate social responsibility is ingrained in our DNA, and providing better opportunities for our stakeholders has been our guiding principle since the company was founded.
For more than 150 years, First Horizon has prospered because of the business, trust and loyalty we have earned from our customers and shareholders. Supporting our communities is a business imperative. After all, our business model is to provide financial capital and services, which people and businesses need to make their lives better and help our communities prosper. Through our corporate initiatives and the volunteerism of our employees, we do much more."
First Horizon has championed good corporate citizenship throughout our 154-year history. We are proud of the impact we’ve made and remain committed to our responsibilities to our communities, employees and environment.
Through our newly unveiled Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy and inaugural report we discuss our focus on sound business practices and our commitment to building stronger communities across the Southeast.
Below are some highlights from the inaugural 2018 CSR/ESG Report titled Here for Good.
Founded in 1993, First Horizon Foundation is our charitable foundation and operates as First Tennessee Foundation (to support our community investment efforts in Tennessee and Texas) and Capital Bank Foundation (to support our community investment efforts in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia). To date, more than $90 million in grants have been distributed as part of our investment in the communities that we serve.
In 2018, we marked First Horizon Foundation’s 25th anniversary of partnering with nonprofit organizations to uplift our communities. To commemorate this milestone, we introduced our 25 Years of Giving Video Contest in June. Nonprofit organizations were asked to share 60-second video stories of how our Foundation has partnered, or could partner, with their organizations to strengthen our communities. More than 500 submissions were received and through the help of public voting and a panel of judges, 35 organizations were selected to receive anniversary tribute grants totaling $265,000. In 2018 alone, our employees gave more than 10,000 hours to serve local nonprofits in our communities providing benefits to them valued at more than $250,000.
We think it’s important to give back to the communities we serve. To us, it’s not only good business practice; it’s the right thing to do.

We recognize the significant and beneficial roles diversity and inclusion (D&I) play in our organization’s workforce, workplace and marketplace. As a result, we run D&I like a business with the support of data, insights and regular review of strategy and accountabilities.
To better connect with other diverse colleagues, we use Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to drive leader and employee engagement, foster support and provide networking opportunities. Employees can join one of the 12 chapters of these seven ERGS:
In addition to our Employee Resource Groups, employees can further engage by becoming members of the company’s Inclusion and Diversity Council. The council, led by two executive sponsors, is comprised of employees representing a wide range of business lines, seniority levels and backgrounds.
We work hard to ensure that they are included and heard, and know their value to our organization.

Since our founding more than 150 years ago, it’s been ingrained in our DNA to ‘care beyond our company.’ That care extends to our environment. Out of respect for our earth, we are constantly seeking ways we can be better, more efficient stewards of our resources and reduce our carbon footprint. Some of our sustainability initiatives include: embracing energy efficient technology and energy management systems to monitor, control, conserve and reduce our energy consumption; harnessing and using alternative or clean energy sources like solar power; and recycling paper and furniture.
“Smart” Buildings: All First Horizon buildings are designed or renovated with the goals of enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability. Our 25-story headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, built more than 50 years ago, has been renovated over the last decade and now meets the EPA’s strict energy performance standards to be an Energy Star-certified building, meaning it performs better than at least 75 percent of similar buildings nationwide. The skyscraper’s large windows feature energy-saving roller shades; its HVAC system is calibrated to save energy during non-business hours; each floor features motion-sensor lighting so energy is not wasted; all light fixtures feature LED bulbs; and all bathrooms feature low-volume flush valves and motion-activated faucets. As a result of these energy-efficient technologies, our annual energy usage (in kilowatts) and water usage has decreased significantly in our headquarters.
We are in the process of upgrading all parking lot lights at all of our 300 financial centers to energy efficient, long-lasting LED bulbs. These new bulbs are not only more sustainable, they also help the bottom line by reducing maintenance costs. As other First Horizon facilities are remodeled, all incandescent and fluorescent bulbs and fixtures are updated with LED bulbs.
Our new banking centers will be built to LEED standards. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized green building certification system aimed at improving performance across key sustainability metrics.
Clean Energy: Another way we’re working to reduce our company’s carbon footprint is by embracing clean energy sources. We installed a state-of-the-art solar photovoltaic system at our company's operations center. The system currently produces 40,800 kilowatt hours of clean electricity per year – enough to power four homes’ electricity use for one year.
Recycling: This year alone, our company’s recycling program has recycled nearly 1.5 million pounds of paper. This translates to saving roughly more than:

Our office furniture is recycled and donated to local nonprofits in our communities. If an item cannot be salvaged or repaired, its components are repurposed for the manufacturing of new furniture.
